Here's a helpful video showing you how to brush with your braces on.

* Floss every day to clean between your teeth.

* Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks during your orthodontic treatment with Drs. Bronksy, Matos and Moon.

* Visit your general dentist regularly (usually every six months apart).

If you have questions about any of these tips, we encourage you to give us a call.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bronskyorthodontics.blogspot.com/2011/06/smile-june-is-national-smile-month.html' title='Smile! What does this leave for you to eat? Lettuce? Nothing?

Luckily, there was someone else wondering the same thing when she first got braces! Brenda Waterman, 13, decided she was going to find a way to have her cake and eat it too, so she created a variety of “braces-friendly” recipes that allow you to enjoy your favorite treats without interfering with your orthodontic care! Her cookbook, “The Braces Cookbook: Recipes you (and your Orthodontist) will Love,” gives patients a variety of delicious recipes, safe to eat with braces; plus additional tips and advice for packing lunches, what to eat at parties, and braces-friendly restaurant dishes! There’s even a section with tips for dealing with the soreness that can occur when your braces or appliance are adjusted. Enjoy the foods you love – even with braces!

Here is a delicious, sneak peek recipe from “The Braces Cookbook:”

Wonderful Waffles

Forget the recipe that came with your waffle iron – this recipe will redefine fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth goodness. The secret to delicious waffles is letting the batter "sit" for five minutes before pouring into the waffle iron. Top cooked waffles with syrup, jam, fresh fruit or even whip cream. Makes about 5 servings!

Preheat your waffle iron according to the directions. You may want to lightly spray it with vegetable oil before heating.

• 3 cups flour
• 2 Tbl + 2 tsp baking powder
• 1 tsp salt
• 2 Tbl sugar
• 4 cups milk
• 4 eggs
• 1/2 cup vegetable oil

In a large bowl, whisk (or use electric mixer on low) together all ingredients. Let batter sit for about five minutes to activate the baking powder.

When waffle iron is ready, pour about 1/3 cup of batter onto each of the four squares (experiment with your iron – you don't want the batter overflowing). Gently close the cover and set your timer as the manufacturer suggests. Do not lift the cover while they bake. When done, carefully lift one edge with a flat spatula and pull the waffle away from the iron. Keep waffles warm on a plate under a clean dishtowel while the others bake.

Enjoy!

-Your friends at Bronsky Orthodontics

Dr. Mark J. At an age when image is so important, the thought of having braces may intensify the already-delicate confidence of today's teens. Well, May is National Teen Self-Esteem Month, and during this time, parents are encouraged to act as positive role models, help stop negative self-images, and improve confidence and security among teenagers.

One of the great ways to improve your confidence is to improve your smile. And that begins with a consultation at our Park Avenue and TriBeCa offices. After all, what better time to avoid having crooked teeth in your adulthood than coming in for a consultation?

We proudly provide traditional braces and Invisalign for today’s image-conscious teens, and invite you to give us a call to schedule a consultation or ask us on Facebook!

Dr. Mark J. One of these gatherings – the American Association of Orthodontists’ Annual Session in Chicago this weekend- is an educational event that is one of the largest orthodontic conventions in the world – and one that allows us to stay up-to-date on all the latest technologies and orthodontic treatment options available. This, in turn, allows us to give you, our wonderful patients, the best treatment experience possible. Dr. Bronsky will be attending the event this year, which runs from today through Tuesday. Check out his smile in Jerry Maguire, Rain Man or The Firm and compare to the post-braces Tom Cruise in Valkyrie or Tropic Thunder. The fact is, movie stars need to look their best for the silver screen, and it wouldn't be possible without orthodontists like Drs. April is National Facial Protection Month, and during this time, Dr. Bronsky, Dr. Matos, Dr. Moon and our dedicated team urge our young athletes to play it safe when out on the field.

According to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation, children, high-school athletes and adults will have more than 5,000,000 teeth knocked out in sporting events this year.

Here are a few ways to ensure your mouth’s safety this spring, courtesy of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists:

Wear mouth guards for contact sports such as baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.
Wear a helmet
Wear protective eyewear
Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
Be alert, even as a spectator

We hope that helps. Protective gear is vital for anyone engaging in tooth or mouth-threatening activities. Some foods can occasionally damage braces, but certain foods can bend the wires or even break the brackets on your braces. If you’re wearing braces, you should avoid starch, sugar and gummy foods, as these foods can be difficult to remove during brushing. Foods that are high in sugar and starch tend to cause plaque, cavities and even tooth decay.

Avoid tough meats, hard breads and raw vegetables such as carrots and celery. Before long, you'll be able to bite a cucumber again. But you'll need to protect your orthodontic appliances when you eat for as long as you're wearing braces.

Foods you should avoid include:

• Chewy foods: bagels, hard rolls, licorice
• Crunchy foods: popcorn, ice, chips
• Sticky foods: caramels, gum
• Hard foods: nuts, candy
• Foods you have to bite into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots

Also, chewing on hard things (for example, pens, pencils or fingernails) can damage the braces. Damaged braces will cause treatment to take longer.

If you have any questions on which foods you should be avoiding and why, we invite you to give Bronsky Orthodontics a call or ask our staff during your next visit.

Dr. Mark J. It's changed periodically throughout treatment, as teeth move to their new positions.

Loop in Archwire: Frequently used for closing space left by an extraction. Many archwires don't have a loop.

Bracket: Small attachment that holds the archwire in place. Most often, a bracket is cemented directly onto the tooth's surface, eliminating the need for a band.

Headgear Tube: Round, hollow attachment on the back bands. The inner bow of the headgear fits into it.

Coil Spring: Fits between brackets and over archwire to open space between teeth.

Tie Wire: Fine wire that is twisted around the bracket to hold the archwire in place.

Band: A thin ring of metal fitted around a tooth and cemented in place. The band provides a way to attach the brackets to the tooth.

Hook: Welded or removable arm to which elastics (rubber bands) are attached.

Elastic (Rubber Band): Small rubber band that is hooked between different points on the appliance to provide pressure to move the teeth.

Hope this helps! We’re living longer and technology is improving, making orthodontic treatment an appealing and safe option for patients of all ages. As the trend toward treatment later in life grows, we’re seeing braces on parents as well as children – and even adult celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Gwen Stefani and Nicholas Cage have shown off their braces. It’s never too late to look and feel your best with Bronsky Orthodontics!

Can Braces Work for Adults?

People of all ages can benefit from orthodontic treatment. The physical process for moving teeth is the same, young or old, which means it’s never too late to address issues such as an overbite or underbite, crooked or crowded teeth, or jaw disorders.

How Do I Get Started?

If you’re considering orthodontic treatment, we’ll make a consultation appointment with you. During this meeting we will perform a general assessment of your oral health, discuss options for treatment, and answer any questions you may have. We will also discuss matters of cost and insurance. The next step is an orthodontic records appointment in which we take x-rays, photos, and an impression of your teeth. This information drives your unique treatment plan.

What Are the Benefits?

Straightening your teeth can improve your smile, your self-esteem, and your dental health. Technologically advanced new treatments make it easier to identify the option that best fits your lifestyle. Modern techniques and materials have made braces and aligners more effective, comfortable and unobtrusive than ever.

If you think you might benefit from orthodontic treatment, give us a call, so we may set up a consultation to determine what type of treatment best meets your needs.

Dr. Mark J. Braces and orthodontic appliances can be more challenging to brush and floss around, but an effective daily routine will help ensure the best possible results when your braces come off! While we can help you learn the best methods for oral hygiene with braces, don’t forget that it’s also important to visit your regular dentist every six months (or as recommended). Because your dental health is important to us, we'd like to remind you to keep up to date with your dental exams and cleanings.
Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health, as your dentist can check for problems that might not be seen or felt, Detect cavities and early signs of decay, and treat other oral health problems early.

Oral exams usually involve checking the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been in to your dentist in the last six months (or as recommended), schedule an appointment right away. If you have any questions, feel free to ask us!

Dr. Mark J. Well, our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recently developed the Braces Brigade blog, where past, present, as well as future orthodontic patients from coast to coast document their (or their child’s) orthodontic journeys. That why the doctors and team at Bronsky Orthodontics of uptown and TriBeCa thought February—also known as National Children’s Dental Health Month—would be a great time to remind our patients to be mindful of their braces and teeth while playing sports. Here are a few tips to stay safe on the field this spring, courtesy of the AAO:

1. Wear mouth guards for contact sports such as baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.
2. Wear a helmet
3. Wear protective eyewear
4. Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
5. Be alert, even as a spectator

We hope that helps. Protective gear is vital for anyone engaging in tooth or mouth-threatening activities. If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please contact our Park Avenue or TriBeCa offices today. Finally, don't forget about our iPod Nano giveaway going on all month long! After killing the bacteria, you will want to floss then brush to remove the dead bacteria from your mouth.

Flossing:
It is highly recommended that patients with braces floss their teeth prior to brushing. We suggest flossing at least once a day.

When flossing with SuperFloss or the floss threader, place the floss under the wire, make sure the floss goes underneath the gum line and is flossed on both the right and left side of the tooth. Then pull the floss down and out from under the wire. Make sure to floss all teeth, even the molars in the back.

While on the run, if you find that you have food stuck in between your teeth, you can quickly go to the bathroom and use a Proxabrush. This compact instrument will help to relieve any food build-up around the brackets and on the teeth. Place the Proxabrush under the wire and move up and down on each side of the bracket to remove the excess food.

Please expect to spend 10-15 minutes when flossing.

Brushing:
It is highly recommended that patients with braces brush their teeth for 2 minutes in the morning, at night before bed and after each meal.

When brushing your teeth with braces you need to brush above and below the brackets as well as in a circular motion to include the gum. If yes, that’s great! But, don’t forget that it’s also important for you to visit your general dentist every 3-to-6 months in addition to brushing your teeth and flossing (and visiting our office, of course). Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health, especially during orthodontic treatment.

Your general dentist can check for problems that might not be seen or felt, detect cavities and early signs of decay, treat oral health problems early and show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth.

During an oral exam your dentist can check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been to the dentist in the last six months, let us know during your next visit and we will provide a few great references in the greater New York City area!

Dr. Mark J. We have known for quite some time that positive emotion has been linked to both physical and mental health, but researchers at the university did something quite interesting: they looked at photos of 230 ball-players who began their careers in baseball prior to 1950 and studied their smile intensity (ranging from big smile, no smile or partial smile). The players' smile ratings were compared with data from deaths that occurred from 2006 through 2009. The researchers then took into account other factors that impact life longevity, including body mass index, career length and even college attendance.

The results? Researchers found that players who weren't smiling in the photos died at the average age of 72.9 years. Players with partial smiles lived to be 75. The article discusses the use of x-rays and radiation in dental and orthodontic offices. Newer technologies, such as the 3D CT machines, are touted as safer, but as this article suggests, there are emerging concerns regarding their safety.

FIRST AND FOREMOST--- We do NOT own or use the 3-D CT x-ray machines in our office! While the Cone Beam (3-D CT) X-Ray units are very helpful in certain situations, we only own and operate the LOWEST DOSAGE/HIGHEST RESOLUTION standard digital orthodontic radiographs that exist today. Our PlanMeca X-Ray machines (manufactured outside of Helsinki, Finland) are so well designed that patients don’t even need a lead X-Ray shield (though we use the shields regardless). Safety, comfort, and exemplary results are our main concerns and we are proud to say that our concern for our patients and their radiographic (X-Ray) safety has already been woven into our treatment systems. NO NEED TO WORRY—we are ON IT and always have been. Please feel free to call us with any questions or concerns, we are happy to help!

Dr. Mark J. In a 2009 survey, the American Association of Orthodontists discovered that 70 percent of parents said their biggest worry is that their child will get hurt while playing sports. That’s why we at Bronsky Orthodontics are helping spread the word that many facial sports injuries can be prevented simply by reminding your kids to wear mouth guards. In addition, the AAO has provided the following tips for keeping your kids safe on the field this fall. Please remind them to:

• Wear mouth guards during contact sports
• Wear a helmet
• Stretch before and after a game or practice
• Wear protective eye wear
• Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
• Be observant—even as a spectator

All of these can reduce injuries. Only by using a mouth guard and other forms of facial protection can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. Be sure to avoid mouth guards that custom form to your teeth as these will resist any tooth movements our team at Bronsky Orthodontics are trying to achieve.

Give us a call if you have any questions about mouth guards or your treatment or ask us on Facebook!

Enjoy the long Thanksgiving weekend!

Dr. Mark J. Patients that are undergoing orthodontic treatment should be even more diligent with their oral care routine not only to make their mouth’s healthier but also to help make treatment move faster. We always suggest that each patient flosses at least once per day and brushes 2 to 3 times per day. For patients with retainers we also suggest that the retainers are cleaned with liquid soap and water every night or every morning to avoid bacterial buildup.

To help aid our patients with their best flossing and brushing techniques, we have added several YouTube videos that show animations of the appropriate oral hygiene techniques. We want to remind our patients to return to their dentist’s office for their scheduled oral hygiene (dental cleaning) appointments regardless of your orthodontic status. Hygiene appointments allow the hygienist to do a deep cleaning to help wash away bacteria that can accumulate in the mouth. At many hygiene appointments, radiographs (X-rays) may also be taken to help dental practitioners check for cavities or other underlying issues.

So if you haven’t seen your hygienist in a while, give them a call and schedule a cleaning to get a healthier mouth and body. If you are having a sweet teeth check out our “Recipes” section of the website so that you can create some of your own treats or just stop on by for a chocolate chip cookie in the reception area.

Here are a few fun recipes for all of you chocolate, Jello, apple, or peanut butter lovers.

Many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters with braces. These treats can potentially cause damage that may prolong treatment. This is why the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) is providing tips for trick-or-treaters with braces. Learn about which treats are friendlier to braces and which ones should be avoided. A few sweets can be okay occasionally, provided that the orthodontic patient remembers to brush and floss after eating. Below are guidelines for orthodontic patients so that they can enjoy the holiday and still be on pace to achieve their healthy, beautiful smiles.

Braces-Friendly Treats

In general, orthodontic patients should look for foods that are soft and easy to chew. Soft, melt-in-your-mouth chocolates Peanut butter cups Milk shakes Gelatin Peeled, thinly sliced apples Ice cream.

Treats To Avoid

In general, orthodontic patients should avoid treats that are sticky, hard, chewy or crunchy. Caramel Nuts (including candies that contain nuts) Licorice, jellybeans or taffy Hard pretzels Bubblegum Candy corn Lollipops Popcorn (including un-popped kernels) Taco chips Ice.

The AAO encourages orthodontic patients to consult with their orthodontist if they have specific questions or concerns pertaining to the types of foods that they should avoid.

Here Comes the Good Stuff!

Now that you know the dos and don'ts, here are some fantastic recipes, courtesy of the AAO, perfect not only for the child with braces, but EVERY child! That way, no one will feel left out this Halloween, and your party will be a monster success!

PUMPKIN PATCH BROWNIES

Ingredients: 1 box of favorite instant brownie mix 1 bag candy pumpkins 1 tube green decorating gel 1 tube orange decorating gel

Directions: Follow brownie mix package directions and bake in a 9" by 13" pan. Cool for 20 minutes; remove from dish.

To create a pumpkin patch, place pumpkin candies one inch apart all over surface. Draw lines (vines) with green gel and accent with orange gel as desired.

SCARY JIGGLERS*

Ingredients: 2-1/2 cups boiling water (Do not add cold water.) 2 pkg. gelatin (any flavor, but we recommend Orange, Grape or Lime for Halloween) Halloween shape cookie cutters - If serving to small children, perhaps consider using smaller cookie cutters to make bites more manageable.

Directions: Stir boiling water into gelatin in large bowl 3 minutes until completely dissolved. Pour into 13x9-inch pan. Refrigerate at least 3 hours or until firm (gelatin does not stick to finger when touched). Dip bottom of pan in warm water about 15 seconds. Cut into 24 decorative shapes using 2-inch cookie cutters, making sure to cut all of the way through the gelatin to the bottom of the pan. Remove from pan. Store in tightly covered container in refrigerator.
DO NOT swallow scary jigglers whole.

*Adapted from the Kraft Foods Kitchen

APPLES AND SPICE COBBLER*

Ingredients: 4-6 large Granny Smith, MacIntosh or other tart, firm apples 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 tablespoon cold, unsalted butter, cut into small pieces 1 10 inch round layer of pie crust (store bought is fine) 1-2 tablespoons milk 2 tablespoons sugar

Directions: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples. In a small bowl, combine the sugars, salt, cornstarch, cinnamon and nutmeg. In a large bowl, toss the apple slices and the dry ingredients together, then sprinkle in the vanilla extract and toss one more time. Pour the apples into a buttered round cake pan or pie pan, pat the surface as level as possible and dot with butter. Unroll the chilled pie dough onto a floured work surface and cut out a face like you would on a Jack-o-lantern, removing the excess dough where you cut out the eyes, nose and mouth. Carefully roll the dough up onto a rolling pin and unroll it over the apple filling. Brush the dough lightly with milk and sprinkle with additional 2 tablespoons of sugar. Bake for 40-50 minutes, until apples are tender and bubbling through the holes in the crust and crust is golden browned. Serve warm by spooning out a portion with a large serving spoon into dessert bowls and top with whipped cream or ice cream. Makes 4-6 servings.

*Courtesy of Celebrity Pastry Chef Gale Gand

PEANUT BUTTER EYEBALLS*

Ingredients: 1/4 cup butter, completely softened 2 cups plus 2 tablespoons powdered sugar 1 cup creamy peanut butter 1 1/2 cups toasted rice cereal (like Rice Krispies) 12 ounces of white chocolate 1 tablespoon vegetable oil Food coloring - two colors

Directions: Combine the butter, powdered sugar, and peanut butter in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Mix on low speed until well combined. (If you have no mixer, this can be done by hand). Then mix in the toasted rice cereal. Using your hands, form into 1/2-ounce balls (the size of a large marble) and refrigerate until firm (about 1 hour). Place the white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Melt, adding vegetable oil partway through. After all chocolate is melted, stir until smooth. Dip the balls, one at a time into the melted white chocolate mix, using a fork to roll them around so they are entirely coated then remove them from the chocolate and set on a waxed paper lined sheet pan. Chill to set up about 30 minutes. Separate remaining white chocolate into two bowls and add 1-2 drops of food coloring each to tint each bowl a different color. Reheat chocolate if necessary and, using a small spoon, place a dollop of the colored chocolate on the eyeball to make an iris. Use a smaller drop of the contrasting color for the pupil. Let the chocolate set, place balls in individual mini muffin papers and serve. Makes 36 balls.

*Courtesy of Celebrity Pastry Chef Gale Gand

Dr. Mark J. With straight teeth and a correct bite, each patient has a healthier body and a brighter smile. It has been proven that a healthy mouth aids in the long term maintenance of a healthy body and also prevents infections and other mouth related issues such as periodontal disease and decay. Mouth related problems have also been shown to play a role in both heart disease and diseases of the brain (such as Alzheimers and Dementia). Many adults are unaware that straight teeth result in a healthier bite, gums, and bones. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends avoiding: caramel, nuts, licorice, jelly beans, hard pretzels, bubble gum, candy corn, lollipops, taco chips and ice. An off-limits treat now and then is acceptable but be sure to brush and floss afterwards and when it comes to hard, crunchy items, chew lightly.

HALLOWEEN FOODS YOU CAN EAT IF YOU HAVE BRACES

Soft, easy-to-chew foods are acceptable Halloween treats. The American Association of Orthodontics suggests: melt-in-your-mouth-chocolates, peanut butter cups, milk shakes, gelatin, ice cream and sliced apples.

BRUSH AND FLOSS

You don’t want your dental health to be a scary affair, so be sure to brush and floss after your Halloween outings. This will dislodge any candy and other foods stuck in the braces (and is just good dental hygiene you should practice daily).

DENTAL-FRIENDLY HALLOWEEN RECIPES

Spider Bites
These creepy cookies are as fun to eat as they are to set out for hauntingly hungry guests. This recipe is adapted from The Braces Cookbook by Pamela Waterman. The spider legs are made from licorice; check with your orthodontist to see if these cookies are appropriate for your family.

Ingredients:
• 1 cup vegetable shortening
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 2 tablespoons water
• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla
• 2 eggs
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1/2 cup cocoa
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
• 1 package black rope licorice, cut into thin 1-inch pieces
• 1 small tube of white (or color of choice) frosting
• Toothpicks

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
2. In a large bowl, combine shortening, sugar, water and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Add eggs and blend.
3. Slowly mix in flour, cocoa, salt and baking powder at low speed. Drop tablespoon helpings of mixture onto ungreased cookie sheets and roll each helping into a ball.
4. Bake for 9 minutes. Let cookies cool for about 10 minutes.
5. Using a toothpick, create four small holes in either side of each cookie, then push one end of a piece of the cut licorice into each hole, creating the “legs” of the spider.
6. Once all eight legs are in place, create eyes or decorate at will using the white frosting.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_PkByrCGpm00/TKnz29jsSdI/AAAAAAAAAB8/1bosH-FSLrc/s320/slimy-punch.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5524214543509375442" />DENTAL-FRIENDLY HALLOWEEN RECIPES

Slimy Lime Punch
Make sure to use a very large bowl or a saucepan with high sides when making this frothy mixture — the meringue powder will really foam up when you start whisking. This slimy recipe was adapted from Parents Magazine.

Ingredients:
• 2 tubes red decorating gel
• Powdered lemonade mix - to make 2 quarts
• 1/4 cup granulated sugar
• 1 teaspoon meringue powder
• 2 liters seltzer water
• 10 drops green food coloring
• 4 drops yellow food coloring
• 1 peeled and sliced orange
• 1 lime, sliced into 1/8-inch slices
• 1 pint fresh raspberries

Directions:
1. Squeeze red gel down the inside of 12 small, clear glasses. Let dry for about 10 minutes.
2. In an extra-large bowl, combine lemonade mix, sugar and meringue powder. Slowly pour in seltzer, whisking continually until combined.
3. Stir in green and yellow food coloring. Add sliced fruit and berries for color. Pour punch into glasses and serve.

Pumpkin Cookie Pops
Pumpkin shaped cookies on a stick are a nice change from the usual cookie treat. This cookie pops recipe is adapted from www.pumpkinnook.com.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 242px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_PkByrCGpm00/TKn0rWqLQfI/AAAAAAAAACE/A9SfPRSxEr4/s320/cookie-pops.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5524215443600654834" />Ingredients:
• 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
• 1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
• 1/2 cup canned or fresh cooked pumpkin
• 1 tablespoon orange zest
• 1 egg yolk
• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
• 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
• 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
• 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
• Pinch of salt
• 20 wooden sticks (tongue depressors or Popsicle sticks work best)

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
2. In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer beat the butter, brown sugar and orange zest. Add the pumpkin, egg yolk and vanilla, and blend.
3. Gradually add the flour and spices. Mix with your hands to create a soft dough. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
4. Divide dough into two portions. Roll out each piece to 1/4-inch thickness on a floured surface. Cut into pumpkin shapes with cookie cutters.
5. Place on ungreased baking sheet and securely insert a wooden stick into the bottom half of each pumpkin cookie.
6. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes. Decorate with your favorite frosting and Halloween décor.

For more dental-friendly information, visit http://braces.org/nohm/.

Dr. Mark J. At this three day series of courses in Washington, DC, the seminars focused on efficiency in the office setting, enhancing communication systems with our patients and their doctors, implementation of full staff training programs to stay on the leading edge of technology and all that it has to offer an orthodontic practice.

Specifically, we gleaned useful information on making our website and associated systems (Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube) to aid in patient communication and education. We are happy to say that in a few short months since these seminars, we are on course and enjoying the implementation of all that we learned!

It is our goal to pass the value of continuing education courses like these to our patients in the form of superb orthodontic treatment!

Dr. Mark J. So this week, we thought it would be fun to highlight all the places to see after your next appointment at either of our offices. Be sure to share with us any other destinations you think we may have missed!

When you come to visit our Uptown Park Avenue location, in one day you can stop by the Regency Hotel for the best breakfast in Manhattan, run over to Barneys to pick up a quick outfit for the weekend, run, walk or lounge in Central Park to take a break, stop by the Apple store to buy a new iPod or iPad, walk across the street to the Plaza Hotel for high tea in the afternoon, then stop at Tiffany’s to buy a gift for a loved one or yourself and don’t forget to make reservations for a fancy bite of pasta at Gino’s Italian restaurant before you go to a show!

If you stop by our TriBeCa location, you can wakeup to the best coffee and breakfast in downtown at Kaffee 1668, plan for lunch at the fabulous Tribeca Grill or walk to the famous Odeon restaurant if you are in the mood to walk on the French side. We always suggest you walk down Wall Street to see how the stock market is doing, pay your respects to the World Trade Center, have some dinner in the nice cobble stone Meatpacking District and then head over to SOHO so that you can shop until you drop.

Dr. Mark J. We thought it would be fun to create a list of all the reasons why getting started in the summer makes sense. Feel free leave a comment with any other reasons you can think of!

1. Since many people are away during the summertime, our schedule is more flexible so that we can better accommodate their schedule.

2. May be easier on the patient to start orthodontic treatment in the summer, so by Fall, when many patients head back to school, they are adjusted to any new appliances.

3. Getting braces makes a good excuse to have ice cream, which is also a perfect summer time treat!

4. What time is better than the present, many times people postpone seeing the orthodontist because they have upcoming events but the sooner they start with the orthodontist, even to just have a consultation and understand their treatment options, the sooner they will complete treatment.

5. Orthodontics is a very important to creating a healthier bite, teeth, gums and bones for the future. It is always important to see the orthodontist as soon as is recommended by your dentist, to ensure you maintain the highest level of dental and physical health!

Dr. Mark J. Then he earned his post-doctoral certificate in Orthodontics from Boston University’s Goldman School of Graduate Dentistry.

Dentistry has become a family business – his brother is an oral surgeon, his sister is a pediatric dentist and his wife is a periodontist. Orthodontics is something he wanted to do all his life: "I remember being impressed by my orthodontist when I was a child. Even then, I liked the conservative nature of orthodontics: full-mouth reconstruction using existing materials – the teeth. I think of it as healthful and green." Speaking of green, his house is outfitted with an extensive solar array, providing clean and renewable energy to his and neighboring houses.

Dr. Matos enjoys spending time with his wife, Vicky, and children: Sofia, Theodora and John. He enjoys gardening and landscaping at his Long Island home. He has maintained his family’s tradition of winemaking with his father and siblings at his parent’s house in New Jersey; brewing beer is another pastime. Restoring his antique car and music are also in the mix.

His soundtrack? Classic rock'n'roll, old-school rap and jazz.

Dr. Mark J. Whether it is work, downtime or school – she attended Cornell University for her bachelor’s, the University of Michigan for her master’s and NYU for her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree – she wants to make every minute count.

Her thoughtful approach fits perfectly with that of the practice – Dr. Bronsky was one of her attendings at Cornell Medical Center – and translates to her patients as well. "I try to treat my patients the way I would like to be treated," she says. "It’s important to make them comfortable. I think it really makes a difference."

But the thing that attracted her to orthodontics is her mind. "I’m analytical by nature," she says. "I like the thought process behind my work. All the tools are there – it’s my job to come up with the solution."

Music is viewed similarly. "I love that every time you listen to a song, you pick up on different things. I am fascinated by how all the different instruments and voices come together to make the whole feel and sound of a song."

Much like a beautifully orchestrated smile.

Dr. Mark J.
